Producing radio commercials and Sweepers
Radio stations are being consolidated on a daily basis and in many markets, a staff of
six people may be handling the local on air and production duties for two to five
stations. While the entire financial model is to reduce operating costs and increase
profits, advertising clients need to have there commercials work effectively. Using the
same few voices can make a station sound boring as well as losing effectiveness for
advertisers. The simple and economical answer is to use outside production for your key
advertisers.
Spots and other announcements can be faxed in for same day turn around with optional
next day delivery on CD by FedEx or same day delivery (at no additional charge) by
e-mail over the internet.
With the new MP3 audio data compression format, a 30 second mono voice file is only a
little over 300KB which makes it easy to add to an e-mail as an attachment. Once the voice
track has been received at the station (preferably in the production room), the audio
track can be played back for dubbing to the station commercial playback system with audio
editors such as Cool Edit (which is actually shareware). It can also be mixed with music
if there are additional production requirements. MP3 has become the standard with many
freelance commercial voice over announcers because it's ease of use and the fact that
there is no cost is just a coincidence.
